James J. Yasso

In the D book cover by James J. Yasso featuring a moth and cross

I am a first-generation American Chaldean, born and raised in the heart of Michigan. I read and speak our ancient, dying language, a thread that ties me to Babylonian history and to a people whose faith, traditions, and culture have shaped my soul. My love for history runs deep. The stories, rituals, and resilience of my people help me understand who the Chaldeans are, a dying tribe from Babylon. At the same time, I am proud to be American, inspired by the diverse people who make this country great. If everyone in Iraq knew the beauty of coexistence, the kind I’ve seen here in America, my people wouldn’t be living at the edge of extinction. Literature has always been my compass. As a reader and a writer, I’ve found in words a way to connect, express, and reflect the worlds within and around me. I believe stories carry power, they preserve, they bridge, they heal. And I believe I was destined to tell a dying tribe’s story. It is with honor, heart, and hope that I share my writings with you. To better understand why I wrote In The D, and what inspired the At the Edge of Extinction series, read this reflection.📎
